Understanding Your Swing Metrics: Takeaway Explained

Takeaway section evaluates your takeaway by assessing the following aspects 

  • Keeping your upper body as a block by maintaining the triangle (shoulder and arms)
  • Initiating the backswing with sufficient shoulder rotation
  • Maintaining the axis of rotation by keeping the spine angle consistent

Grading Scheme

The takeaway is graded based on how closely it matches professional standards:

Excellent – Your takeaway is well-excuted with enough shoulder rotation while maintaining the triangle.

Good – Your takeaway is generally good with minor issues.

Okay – Your takeaway shows some area of improvement.

Caution – It is recommended to work on your takeaway. 

Feedback
  • “Straighten the golfer’s [lead/trail] elbow more during takeaway.”
    → The golfer's elbow is bent too much and needs to be extended slightly.
  • “The golfer could use more shoulder rotation during takeaway.”
    → The golfer’s shoulder rotation is limited during takeaway.

Takeaway metrics on the analysis page

Lead Elbow Angle

Measures the lead elbow joint angle at the takeaway end position.

Example

If the lead elbow angle is 193.2° and the description is “Slightly Bent,” you need to straighten your lead elbow slightly.

Trail Elbow Angle

Measures the trail elbow joint angle at the takeaway end position.

Example

If the trail elbow angle is 144.01° and the description is “Slightly Bent,” you need to straighten your trail elbow slightly more.

Shoulder Width

Tracks the normalized shoulder width (relative to your height) at the takeaway end position.

Example

If the shoulder width is 11.9% and the description is “Narrow,” you did not rotate your shoulders enough during the takeaway.
