Swing Tune-Up Swing Metric - Head Movement

List of Metrics

Swing Tune-Up calculates several metrics related to how your head moves during the swing. It currently measures the following.

  • Backswing Displacement - How far your head moved away from its initial position at the top of the backswing.
  • Max Displacement -  Maximum amount of head movement throughout your swing (from address to follow through)

Metric Directions

For DTL and Face-on, we define four directions: forward/backward/upward/downward. These directions are consistent regardless of whether you are right-handed or left-handed.

DTL

  • Forward - Direction of the golfer at the address - where the nose is pointing
  • Backward - Opposite of forward
  • Upward - Pointing to the sky
  • Downward - Opposite of Upward

Face-On

  • Forward - The direction the ball is heading
  • Backward - Opposite of forward
  • Upward -  Pointing to the sky
  • Downward - Opposite of Upward

Metric Unit

We use a normalized unit so that it gives a consistent value across different angles and golfers - % of your height (measured by the distance between your feet and nose).

Target Bound

You can also set a target max head displacement, which will be used for live feedback and tracking your progress. We define three target sizes for you to select

  • Tight - 90% of tour pro swings fall within this range. We've analyzed thousands of pro swing videos to calculate these bounds.
  • Normal - 1.2x of Tight
  • Wide - 1.5x of Tight

For now, we define bounds for these club types

  • Wood
  • Hybrid
  • Iron

Live Feedback

If you enable Live Feedback, Swing Tune-Up will provide live feedback during practice by highlighting when and where you crossed the target bound.

Progress Chart

Swing Tune-Up automatically aggregates metrics calculated from your swing videos to show how you are improving over time! It currently shows the following stats.

  • Swing Quality - Shows the percentage of swings within the target bound over time.
  • Histogram with bounds - shows the distribution of each metric with its target bound.
